One of the Best Youth Steel Bands
North of the Caribbean!
The York Lions Club, in April 1972, in the home of the musically-talented Saunders Family-- Doug and brother Don, and Doug's daughter Debbie.
The Band was originally sponsored by the York Lions Club and 5 volunteer members of the Club are still responsible for its operation and management.
The Band now raises its own funds (is self-supporting) and no costs are charged to join, travel or learn musical skill, thus making it accessible to all youth. The York Lions Steel Band is a Registered Not-For-Profit Charity
[tax receipts are available for donations].
The York Lions Steel Band is made up of 25-30 teenagers, between the ages 11 to 19, who perform on various sizes of 45 gallon oil drums. Our young musicians perform on the only new musical instrument of the 20th Century
-The Steel Drum-
The Band provides a constructive, healthy activity for youth in which they learn how to express themselves through music and also to develop leadership and performing skills. The Band's goals are to provide youth with a year-round activity which, inaddition to being lots of fun, teaches responsibility and commitment.
Educational trips, combined with musical performances, are a top priority.
